The TSR Group carries out research activities in Digital Broadcasting, understood as the one-to-many communication service in which the transmissions are intended for direct reception by the general public or a target audience, which may include audio, video and data services.

The main focus of the group is terrestrial broadcasting and the work developed by the group can be categorized into three main research lines:

  • Digital Broadcast Systems Design

  • Network Planning Procedures and Spectrum Management

  • Advanced Signal Processing for Broadcast Receivers

These themes are inter-related and a majority of the research projects carried out by the group include workpackages with tasks from those three topics.


Each one of these research lines encompasses a list of interrelated activities:
 
  • Digital Broadcast System Design

    • Broadcast System architecture definition

    • System chain simulation models

    • Lab tests and prototypes

  • Network Planning Procedures

    • Propagation studies and channel models

    • Network coverage estimation algorithms

    • New Spectrum Management techniques and Sharing

    • StudiesOptimization algorithms

    • Field trials and empirical studies for planning

    • Planning for challenging scenarios: evaluation of the impact of planned wind farms on radiocommunication services 

  • Advanced Signal Processing for Broadcast Receivers

    • Channel estimation and Equalization techniques

    • Efficient receiver architectures for processing

    • Advanced test receiver design

    • Mixed HW/SW prototipes


Additionally, upon request from industry, the group has performed propagation and coverage studies for other RF systems.
