A new reality has arisen in the Basque Country for the last thirty years. Basque speakers have a daily newspaper, some weekly magazines and a Public Broadcasting Service all along the Basque Country. Moreover, local and sectorial media keep on arising. These new media have completed the Basque Communicaton Area.


Nowadays, Journalism in Basque is present in the whole Basque territory (French and Spanish Basque Country). Over 500 journalists and 250 media prove that assertation. All of those are written in Basque, for a potential audience of 779.788 people (current Basque speakers). It has been a spectacular and dizzy growth.


This new reality has been possible thanks to the effort and work carried out by individuals, associations, social movements and institutions that are employed at this area. At the same time, during these three decades, new problems have arisen, mainly derived from a progression of those characteristics. That is why, for the imperious need to think about this reality, we want to organize this 1st Congress on Basque Journalism. We would like this appointment to be the most wide and representative as possible, opened to professionals of the sector, persons in charge of the Administration, student body and professorship of Media Studies. Those who take part on the Congress will make a balance of what is done, as well as a projection of what still remains ahead.
