Symmetry of energy-minimizers in nonlinear elasticity

Consider the problem of minimizing the elastic energy of a
body. If the geometry of the body and the boundary conditions are
symmetric, it is expected that the minimizer is also symmetric. We
give some positive results in this direction by using the method of J.
Sivaloganathan and S. J. Spector based on a special class of
polyconvex funtions. Part of this work is joint with P. Cesana.
