In the context of Materials Science, cavitation is the phenomenom of sudden formation of voids in the material, while fracture is the formation of cracks. We review previous models for cavitation and for fracture in nonlinear elasticity, and then we present our unified model for both. Our analysis for the existence theory has connections with abstract results on the weak continuity of the Jacobian determinant in Sobolev spaces, and on the regularity of the inverse of invertible BV maps. This is a joint work with Duvan Heano (University of Oxford).
