On of the most fascinating phenomena in the physics of quantum gases is the occurrence of quantized vortices in rotating systems. Vortices are a manifestation of superfluidity and their experimental and theoretical study gives rise to many challenging problems. In the lecture an account will be given of some recent mathematical results on the appearance of vortex lattices and a phase transition to a giant vortex state.
