Plasma control in fusion processes is an area of increasing interest, due to the relevance that the new energy research is acquiring, developing ambitious international projects of great significance as it is the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor), which contemplates building a tokamak reactor in France within the next few years that has its European Domestic Agency in Barcelona. Therefore, substantial effort and resources are currently being devoted into the development of a “clean” nuclear technology, which is based upon fusion processes. This effort materializes both in a large number of research papers published within the last two years, specially in the field of Control Engineering applied to fusion processes, as well as in the publication of several monographic on the part of the IEEE Control Society Systems, establishing an area of novel application for Control Theory after some timid efforts in the 50s and beginning of the 90s.
In this context, the present project involves on the one hand, research on improved plasma models in order to obtain a more realistic and precise simulation of its properties and on the other, development and application of new control techniques on these models leading to an improvement in behaviour of the most relevant properties (i.e. form, current and shape) with the subsequent stabilization of the plasma. It must be stressed out that the main issue in fusion is that the hotter and denser the plasma gets, the more unstable it becomes. When the plasma enters an unstable regime, it can disrupt, a process in which the plasma undergoes rapid changes in its internal structure and the magnetic fields are no longer able to confine it within the vessel, calling for an active control in terms of stabilization of plasma pressure and temperature, which allows to increment.
The main objectives of this project are as follows:
(1) Development of new models.
(2) Simulation and code validation.
(3) Development and implementation of new control techniques to the obtained models.
In order to achieve the objectives of this project, the research team is formed of specialists in the areas of modelling, numerical analysis, optimization and simulation; physicists and specialists in nuclear fusion processes, with experience in this field and availability to use the installations in Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in USA and, in particular, access to both the nuclear reactor and Blue Gene, one of the fastest supercomputer nowadays, which will be of future usefulness both to validate the improved models with real data as to simulate the complete system, which implementation, may be computationally expensive even in parallel due to the underlying parametric complexity. Besides, the team is completed by a core of control specialists, providing the necessary complementary knowledge to the project. All these researchers have numerous international publications within their area of expertise.
The team is also backed up by several companies that have shown interest in the application of techniques and results derived from the project as Redox S.A. or General Electric, which are currently promoting the research in new energies within the frame of their strategic lines, as well as the collaboration of other R&D associations.

A linearized, lumped parameter code for plasma control in fusion processes has been devoloped in MatLab. Also, a non-linear transport code, ASTRA, has been embedded into MatLab, so as to work within the Simulink working enviroment. Besides, a live-CD has been developed to create a Beowulf cluster from any node. This CD contains only free software and enables non-specialists to program in parallel at zero cost. Due to its interest for students, research institutes or universities, there exist current negociations with UPV/EHU for possible publication.
